It has been emphasized that Turkey has a species-rich fauna and continental peculiarity due to its habitat richness and geographic diversity. Although many reports have been made on terrestrial and aquatic animals from Turkey since the late 19th century, detailed studies on some groups still remain to be done, one such group is the order Araneae including spiders (Classis; Arachnida). Spiders are one of the eleven orders of the classis Arachnida, which also includes groups such as harvestmen (Opiliones), ticks and mites (Acari), scorpions (Scorpiones), false scorpions (Pseudoscorpiones), windscorpions (Solifugae). They currently include 108 families, about 4000 genera, and more than 40.000 species (Platnick, 2008). Furthermore, 600 fossil species have been described (Selden, 1996; Selden and Dunlop, 1998).
The most comprehensive lists of Turkish spiders dates back to Karol (1967) who listed 302 species belonging to 119 genera with several subspecies, and Bayram (2002) who listed 520 species belonging to 162 genera from Turkey, based on the work of Karol. Most recently, Topçu et al. (2005) provided an updated checklist of spiders of Turkey, incorporating data both from Karol (1967) and Bayram (2002). In this
study, a total of 613 species and 2 subspecies from Turkey are listed by authors. After then, many recent authors in their papers made contributions to the spider fauna of Turkey, such as Kaya et al. (2006), Seyyar et al. (2006a, b), Bayram et al. (2007a, b), Demir et al. (2007a, b), Kunt et al. (2008a, b).
